Today, we received a call from a frustrated provider who recently failed the national exam, despite completing another training program. Seeking better results, the provider inquired about our training program and our $99 exam reference materials, eager to understand why he should choose us to prepare for the next exam. Among other features, he was informed that our program and reference materials are continuously updated to stay in sync with the latest FMCSA guidance and regulations. When he asked for an example of such an update, we shared the methadone guidance change, as outlined in our program:
“The FMCSA is making it clear that everything that is not regulatory is guidance, and that there are very few regulatory conditions: hearing loss and seizures/epilepsy are the conditions that are subject to regulatory requirements, not guidance recommendations. These are also the only conditions for which there are specified exemption programs. The FMCSA does specify some other conditions as disqualifying without indicating whether these are regulatory or guidance recommendations. These other disqualifying conditions include a current diagnosis of alcoholism and use of a Schedule I drug (such as marijuana/THC). One condition that the FMCSA previously indicated was disqualifying - use of methadone - is now described by the FMCSA as a condition that may be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, like all non-regulatory conditions, the ME should use discretion to make the appropriate certification determination for a driver taking methadone.”
