Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - APRN/APN
An Advanced Practice Nurse is a nurse with post-graduate education in nursing. APNs are prepared with advanced didactic and clinical education, knowledge, skills, and scope of practice in nursing. Advanced practice nursing defines a level of nursing practice that utilizes extended and expanded skills, experience and knowledge in assessment, planning, implementation, diagnosis and evaluation of the care required.
Can an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse become a certified Medical Examiner with the DOT?
To be listed as a certified Medical Examiner with the DOT/FMCSA NRCME program, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) must be licensed, certified, or registered in accordance with applicable state laws and regulations to perform physical examinations.

= The FMCSA has not received verification from your state licensing board that the DOT exam is within the scope of practice for your profession. You may proceed with registration, but the FMCSA must receive verification from your state licensing board before certifying you. We recommend that you delay your certification test until the state licensing board has confirmed that the DOT exam is within your scope of practice.
